Multicultural Students

There are many scholarship opportunities for Multicultural students. Below is a list of UNI specific scholarships for minority students. Some are awarded upon admission to UNI, while many require the completion of the UNI Scholarship Application.

UNI-T.E.D Scholarship (UNIfying through Excellence and Diversity): Available to both new freshman and transfer students who meet one of the following criteria, along with a GPA component (for students entering in the Fall of 2020):

  • From a traditionally underrepresented population (African American/Black, Hispanic/Latino, Alaskan Native or American Indian, Asian American, Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander, or Multiracial)
  • Have participated in a TRIO program

UNI Scholarships

 

IMPORTANT: The amounts of the following scholarships vary based on available funding.

Aegon Transamerica Foundation Endowed Scholarship (Three awards to be made to one of each of the following):

  1. Student-athlete (not on a full-ride athletic scholarship) with a preference to student with major or minor in business-related field
  2. Major in Business Teaching
  3. Business major
  • Students must be an Iowa resident
  • Demonstrate potential for success
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5
  • Preference to a minority student

University Book & Supply Excel Endowed Scholarship

  • Student must be pursuing a major in the College of Business
  • Maintain full-time enrollment
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Be a minority student
  • Renewable with a minimum GPA of 2.5

John Deere Waterloo Operations Endowed Scholarship

  • Students in the College of Business or the Industrial Technology 
  • Sophomore or higher 
  • Minimum GPA of 3.25
  • Preference to minority students, female students, and student-athletes who meet NCAA and university eligibility requirements

Principal Financial Group Scholarship

  • Students must be majoring in Business/Data Analytics (or related), Finance, Accounting, Real Estate, Marketing/Communications/Sales, Business/Management, Financial Services, International Studies, or Economics
  • Student must be full time
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Preference to students who are: 1) Active in leadership roles on and off campus 2) Minority students, students with disabilities, veterans 3) Bi-lingual or multi-lingual 4) Interested in internships or full-time employment at Principal (based on availability at Principal)
  • Two scholarships annually

Ernst & Young Diversity Scholarship

  • Student majoring in Accounting
  • Junior or senior status
  • Must be member of an underrepresented minority group such as African American, Asian, Hispanic or Native American descent
  • Must demonstrate a potential for leadership through participation in university, department, or community organizations
  • Minimum GPA of 3.2 and no grade below a B- in accounting classes
  • Maintain full-time enrollment

Principal Financial Group Real Estate Investors Scholarship

  • Real Estate undergraduate student
  • Full-time enrollment
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Must be U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Preference to students who are: 1) Active in leadership roles on and off campus 2) Minority students, students with disabilities, veterans 3) Bi-lingual and multi-lingual 4) Interested in internships or full-time employment at Principal (based on availability at Principal)

John and Mary Pappajohn Scholarship

  • Preference is given to minority, disadvantaged or ethnic students
  • Students must demonstrate financial need
  • Four awards

Gladys Reeve Wenthe Endowed Scholarship

  • Minority student pursuing a degree in Elementary Education
  • Sophomore or above
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5
  • Must reapply to be considered in subsequent years

Shirley L. Friar Endowed Scholarship

  • College of Education student with intended major in Elementary Education
  • Preference to female of color
  • Award may be renewable

Janet McClain Memorial Scholarship

  • Preference given to students of ethnic or racial status of African American/Black
  • Pursue a career in teaching
  • Full-time freshman, sophomore or transfer students are eligible

Lily Nina Furgerson Endowed Scholarship

  • Minority student who intend to have teaching as a career
  • Preference to students from Black Hawk County, Linn County and then to students from Iowa
  • Student must demonstrate leadership skills, citizenship skills, and scholarship qualities
  • Award may be renewable

Dr. Sandra Long Scholarship

  • African-American female
  • Must be accepted into the teacher education program

E.L. Poe Endowed Scholarship

  • Early Childhood Education major
  • Undergraduate student with financial need
  • Preference to minority student
  • Personal interview

Mary Haskell-Hansen Art Education Endowed Scholarship

  • Art (with emphasis on Art Education)
  • Full-time enrollment
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • Minimum of 6 semester hours of art each semester
  • Preference given to Native American and/or African-American students

Carol and David Bodensteiner Endowed Scholarship

  • Communication Studies
  • Preference to Public Relations
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5 
  • Minority status
  • Deserving
  • Award may be renewable

Catherine E. Boysen Music Endowed Scholarship

  • Minority student in School of Music
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Full-time enrollment
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5
  • Award may be renewable

John Deere Minority Student Technology Scholarship

  • Manufacturing or Electrical Engineering Technology
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • Minority
  • Recipient must be eligible to work in the United States on a full-time basis
  • One-year award

Prem Sahai Actuarial Science Endowed Scholarship

  • Actuarial Science
  • Excellent academic records
  • Preference to Asian Indian Origin

Principal Financial Group Actuarial Scholarship

  • Actuarial Science
  • Undergraduate, full-time student
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Must be U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident

Grossman-Perrine Endowed Scholarship

  • Physics
  • Preference to women and minorities

Regions Bank Endowed Scholarship

  • Awarded to full-time, minority students who graduated from a high school in Black Hawk County
  • Must demonstrate financial need as determined by the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)
  • Renewable with continued financial need, full-time status, and maintaining minimum 2.0 GPA

Charles Means Quasi-Endowed Scholarship

  • Minority students
  • Minimum 2.0 GPA 

Rellihan Styron Minority Scholarship

  • Scholarship awarded to incoming freshmen students with minority status and are U.S. Citizens
  • Recipients must also have been residents of Black Hawk County for 5 years 
  • Graduated from an Iowa high school
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5 during high school
  • Full-time enrollment
  • An essay is also required explaining involvement in community, personal goals, and reasons the applicant should be selected
  • Financial need is considered
  • Renewable with minimum 2.5 GPA

Minority Students Endowed Scholarship

  • Minority Status to be considered

Dorothy Moon Endowed Scholarship

  • Scholarship awarded to needy and deserving students
  • Equal consideration given to minority and foreign students

Robert W. Bettle East High-Waterloo Endowed Scholarship

  • Scholarship awarded annually to a graduate of Waterloo's East High School
  • Minority student preferred
  • Preference to students with interest in a career in education
  • Renewable assuming student meets Satisfactory Academic Progress guidelines
  • If East High no longer exists, preference to a high school graduate in Waterloo, IA

Black Hawk County Opportunities Scholarship

  • African American
  • Financial need
  • Preference to Black Hawk County residents who attend Antioch Baptist or Union Baptist Church
  • Preference to those who live at home and commute to campus
  • Award may be renewable

Barbara Harper Norman Scholarship

  • Preference to freshmen African-American male or female students
  • Student must demonstrate financial need and merit

Principal Financial Group STEM Scholarship

  • STEM related field of technology (IT/MIS/Computer Science)
  • Junior, full-time student
  • Maintains cumulative GPA of 3.5
  • Minority status (including ethnicity, disability, female or veteran)
  • Must be U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Demonstrate excellent leadership accomplishments
  • Preference given to students who have studied abroad or traveled internationally and are bi-lingual or multi-lingual
  • Show explicit interest in the “Principal Financial Group Scholarship” on the UNI Scholarship Application

Willella Fluellin/Bill and Gwen Hood Scholarship

  • Preference to African-American students
  • Freshman or sophomore
  • Incoming freshman must have a 2.0 high school GPA and sophomores must have a 2.0 college GPA
  • May be renewable from freshman to sophomore year
  • Three $1,000 scholarships annually

UNI Alumni Association Quasi-Endowed Scholarship (Three scholarships awarded)

  1. Currently enrolled undergraduate or incoming freshman, child or an alumnus (at least one parent must have been awarded a degree from UNI), minimum GPA of 2.75
  2. Currently enrolled undergraduate or incoming freshman, minority status, minimum GPA of 2.75
  3. Currently enrolled graduate student, received a Bachelor's degree from UNI, must meet satisfactory academic progress policy if currently enrolled in graduate program or minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75

Carl Boyd Minority Football Endowed Scholarship

  • Student must be a minority, and demonstrate academic success and financial need
  • Must be in good standing with the UNI Intercollegiate Football program
  • Preference to an out-of-state student
